Product description

La Leyenda will be available as a 4CD box set, a 2CD deluxe edition, and a single-disc hits collection. The box set includes an exclusive Selena charm and an extensive, bound book with personal messages from Selena's family, friends and fans, as well as rare photos and art from her family's collection, and the 2CD deluxe edition features an extensive booklet. All three configurations will also be available for download purchase, accompanied by digital booklets with the personal messages, photos and artwork.

The tragic events of March 31, 1995, the day American Tejano music's reigning queen, Selena, was murdered at the age of 23 in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, remain vividly and sorrowfully imprinted in the minds of her family and other loved ones and her legions of devoted fans around the world. The CD and digital booklets for La Leyenda include heartfelt messages from many of Selena's most ardent supporters, including her parents, husband, siblings and other family members, friends and fans, recounting special memories, favorite songs and other personal recollections of the beautiful and talented singer.

Selena began performing professionally at the age of 9, backed by a second generation of her father Abraham's band, Los Dinos. The band's members included Selena's sister, Suzette, who played drums, her brother, Abraham, who played bass and wrote or co-wrote many of Selena's songs, and lead guitarist Chris Perez, whom Selena married in 1992.

In 1987, when she was just 16 years old, Selena was honored with two major Tejano Music Awards, for Performer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. In 1989, she was the first artist to be signed by EMI Latin, and the following year, she released her self-titled debut album. Her next album, Ven Conmigo, released in 1991, was the first Tejano album to be certified gold by the RIAA, with U.S. sales totaling more than 500,000 copies.

Selena's 1993 concert album, Live, won the Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Album. In 1994, she released the double-platinum certified Amor Prohibido, which held the #1 position on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart for 20 weeks and was a fixture on the chart for 145 total weeks.

At the start of 1995, Selena was at work in the studio, recording a new album with English and Spanish lyrics. Dreaming Of You was conceived by Selena as a bridge to connect more closely with her many English-speaking fans. Tragically, Selena was killed before the album's release, just three weeks after she set the still-standing attendance record at Houston's Astrodome with her final concert. As people around the world were united in shocked mourning for one of popular music's most promising and brightest young stars, Selena's previously released albums re-entered the charts and she set new, as-yet-unbroken records for the most concurrent titles at the top of the Top Latin Albums chart with the entire Top 4 (April 22, 1995) and Top 5 (May 6, 1995).

Released in July 1995, Dreaming Of You debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums, Top Latin Albums and Latin Pop charts and was certified triple-platinum by the RIAA upon its release. The album reigned at #1 for 44 weeks on the Top Latin Albums chart, and its title track and "I Could Fall In Love" were high-ranking hits across multiple Billboard singles and radio airplay charts.

Today, Selena's Amor Prohibido and her Ones hits collection consistently rank among the Top 20 titles on Billboard's Top Latin Catalog chart.

La Leyenda gathers Selena's top hits and fan favorites for a career-spanning celebration of her vibrant music and life. The box set includes 82 tracks on four CDs, grouped by musical style, language and version as follows: Disc 1: Cumbias y Pop; Disc 2: Tejano y Rancheras; Disc 3: English; Disc 4: Live. The 2CD deluxe edition features a selection of 30 stellar tracks from the box set, and the single-disc collection includes 15 essential tracks which are also contained in the box set and in the 2CD package.

Customer reviews

« How did I already know? »
To the folks that reviewed this product, thank you... I had a suspicion that this was yet another "greatest hits" that is merely put in a beautiful package; I see that I was not wrong.
The only thing I'll say that my fellow reviewers didn't is that, if you are unfamiliar with Selena's music, this would probably be a good investment for you. You get the full range of the spectrum here, starting with the pop-flavored Tejano rancheras that made her a favorite in the late 80s/early 90s and the cumbias that took her out of Texas, as well as the English tracks that tragically continue to show us that, had she lived, Selena would have been HUGE across the board.
However, if you're a fan that has the complete Selena collection (or close to it), then you're better off waiting until some actual unreleased material comes out.

« should give us more than we already have... »
As a huge Selena fan, i feel that they should have put more effort into this collection to give it a new twist. Even though I like the colors and the designs of the box, it's pretty much similar to the Anthology and the Unforgettable collection. Instead of releasing just the same material year after year, give us something different that we have never heard before. Just like what the people did to Michael's Ultimate Collection cd, they should add unreleased songs and demos. Include any footages or rare interviews or even spoken rare facts on Selena. Make this collection more worthy to buy...it's been 15 years so this marks another milestone. They should have really done something BIG with this collection...for old time fans and new ones!

« Love it! BUT, no demos yet. »
I was also sad that there were no Dreaming Of You demos as was said a year ago. I also know that there is probably around 10 takes of Como La Flor and all the songs that became hits! Also alot of Promo Remixes just for radio play to promote Dreaming Of You Album. "AND" the biggest hidden video of all - El Toro Relajo! The whole video was shot for Don Juan DeMarco and Behind the Scene!!! Also as stated from previous costumer, her last concert shot in Chicago!!! We still have lots of gems from our Princess!!!!

« Very Nice Indeed, but... »
I've always been and always will be a huge fan of Selena. It was in late 2009, I was hearing rumors of a new box set coming out with unreleased demos from the Dreaming of You sessions in 1995. Also, unreleased Spanish songs. The track listing for this box set was released in January of this year and I was a little disappointed.

Again, we have All the songs that have been released time and time before. Yes, I do love these songs but again they decided to package the same material. Yes I do love the nice booklet, the cover of this album, and locket that comes with it. But again, its all the same songs. Disc 1, covers all of Selena's well known Spanish hits, "Amor Prohibido", "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", "Como La Flor", etc.

Disc 2 covers mostly Selena's Tejano & Rancheras, "No Me Queda Mas", "Ven Conmigo", "Ya Ves" etc. I have all of these songs from the original studio albums and previous greatest hits packages.

Disc 3 covers all of Selena's English songs. "I Could Fall In Love", "Dreaming of You", "Missing My Baby" etc., Again!, I have all of these songs already.

Lastly, Disc 4 covers "Live" versions of the songs. I wouldn't get to excited, these "live" versions are from the previous albums, her 1993 Grammy Winning "Selena Live", and 2001 "Live, The Last Concert".

I just don't get it, they could have included a bonus dvd with rare concert footage of Selena from 1995. I would love to see her actual final performance, which was on March 19th,1995. Also, all the rare interviews she has given and maybe add her Coca-Cola commercials in there. But all we get is the same songs that they have released over and over and over again. If you already own, "All My Hits Part 1 & 2", "Ones", "Unforgettable - Ultimate Collection", or the "Selena Anthology". I wouldn't bother with this one. But I am a die hard fan, who must collect everything.

On the positive note, All the songs are here from our queen and they are all remastered. Maybe for the 2011 anniversary, they will release something that we have not heard before. We Miss You Selena, 15 years later and your still the best!
