(mca) Release Date: 09/07/2010 Run time: 96 minutes Rating: R No comic explosion, but not quite a dud, no Wayne's World, but not The Ladies Man either, MacGruber does manage to pull off the seemingly impossible mission of expanding a 90-second one-joke Saturday Night Live sketch into a feature film. What's next: "Toonces the Cat Who Could Drive a Car"? In those MacGruber sketches, Will Forte's mullet-maned hero "makes life-saving inventions out of household materials" but always gets sidetracked as the bomb he's defusing ticks down to its last 20 seconds. Blown up for the big screen, MacGruber finds a bigger payoff whenever the film sidetracks from the standard-issue '80s action movie plot, as witness MacGruber's deranged revenge fantasies toward a driver who hurled a drive-by insult at his car. MacGruber's secret weapon is Val Kilmer as a megalomaniacal villain (his name, not appropriate for a family website, is a profanely puerile running joke) with a stolen Russian nuclear warhead and a grudge against MacGruber. MacGruber's somewhat less than A-team includes Vicki St. Elmo (SNL MVP Kristin Wiig), more into her music than into saving the world, and straight arrow Lieutenant Piper (Ryan Phillippe), who begins to question MacGruber's unorthodox tactics (one involving a diversionary stalk of celery is just one of the film's more jaw-dropping gross-out gags). MacGruber may not set the world on fire, but the insanely committed Forte, like MacGruber, will do anything, no matter how obscene, to complete his mission. Mission pretty much accomplished, particularly in a sex scene that is the most outrageous of its kind since Team America: World Police (albeit, thankfully, not as graphic). --Donald Liebenson Customer reviews « Complete waste of time » Refers to the unrated version - This really ranks among the worst movies I've seen in a long time. It had lots of potential but turned into a total waste of time. Any redeeming moments were repeatedly neutralized by moronic attempts at humor. Might work in skits, but becomes old very quickly in a feature length film. Rating: (2 out of 5) @ 2010-09-09 « Stupid » Worth a rent. It was entertaining for the most part. Lots of SNL type humor. It was stupid. Rating: (3 out of 5) @ 2010-09-08 « I expected dumb this was more than I could handle » Dumb, I expect dumb and I like a lot of dumb movies but this one was moronic. Rating: (1 out of 5) @ 2010-09-08 « Top 5 Funniest Movies Ever Created » Went to see this movie with a completely open mind, having never even heard of the SNL skits. Top 5 Comedy movies ever created, and most underrated comedy movie ever created. It was so funny (sober) that I went back the next day and saw it again high as a kite, and I couldn't remain in my seat I was laughing so hard. I've since Pirated the movie, and have watched it another 10 or 15 times at least, and I am anxiously awaiting the release on Blu-Ray so I can buy it and own it in high quality with extra footage. You will not be disappointed in this movie, I guarantee it. Rating: (5 out of 5) @ 2010-08-23 « Nothing but unimaginative potty humor » By far one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Anyone with any kind of good taste would find this movie annoying and boring. There are certain people that can get away with it and make toilet humor funny (Monty Python). But these poor excuses for actors or comedians don't even come close. Not funny period. Combine that with the fact that it was originally a skit and you have the recipe for this disaster, as it is obvious that the writers had trouble coming up with new material for a full length picture.
