The big selling point for The Way of the Gun is the fact that it was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the guy who wrote The Usual Suspects. Benicio Del Toro and Ryan Phillippe star as two low-rent criminals who fall into a plan to kidnap a surrogate mother (Juliette Lewis) who is carrying a baby for a very wealthy couple. The duo are immediately in over their heads, and their kidnapping plot brings to light the dark and hidden tendrils of the old man's family structure. It also brings on lots of gunfights and lots of blood. McQuarrie creates some good action sequences (particularly the slow-moving car "chase" through the alleys), but that only serves to emphasize the one major weakness of the film: the script. Though it's chock full of macho declarations, shootouts, and "surprise" revelations, the core story is ultra-predictable. That wouldn't be so bad if there were any characters to care about, but only a supporting performance from James Caan elicits any kind of sympathy. This is merely a movie based on violent movies, with no additional commentary. Then again, McQuarrie does do a nice job with much of the action. Though nowhere near as good as The Usual Suspects, particularly in its story, The Way of the Gun is a promising debut for McQuarrie as a director. --Andy Spletzer

« Unique and Complex, but Overdone. »
My boyfriend picked this one. It has potential, but for me, the story alone was kind of a put-off. And just when you start feeling good about the change of heart of some of the characters, everything gets violent again and so many people die. While I guess the ending is good, it's most certainly not happy. And excess guns and violence and blood only gets a story so far. This is the opposite of a chick flick! Benecio Del Toro executes his role perfectly, while Ryan Phillipe leaves something to be desired. For me, this is the rent and watch once, and maybe watch again later kind of movie. Not great.

« Tight rhythm »
Great editing and direction. The film has a great rhythm. Cold, thin character development, lets you know just enough to define the archetype. Then throws them together, and watches things play out. Fun film, holds your attention. Ronin [Blu-ray], The Usual Suspects [Blu-ray], and Michael Man's Thief Are similar titles.

« Blu Ray Done Right »
I have had the DVD of this movie for a few years now, and was pleased to see a Blu Ray version out, as this is one of my favorites, and worthy of a replacement upgrade.

For a review of the film itself, there are many out there, I will not repeat them. It is entertaining, with many funny moments, and a story that keeps moving along.

This Blu Ray is a great transfer, there is not much to complain about. The detail and sharpness are amazing, good contrast and solid blacks throughout. The DTS sound is crisp and clear, with good range, although I do not have the system or the ear to thoroughly evaluate it.

I was fearing this movie would suffer on Blu Ray as others of its type have, a 10 year old not-so-popular release, but I was thankfully not disappointed.

« Worth what I paid for. »
This movie is for the typical "shoot 'em up" fans out there. I'm not going to spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it. If you like Benecio Del Toro in one of his better roles, watch this movie. Nice story, action, and screenplay. Sarah Silverman plays as a guest role (hilarious scene).

« A fine and tense movie, Del Toro leads ! »
This is an excellent thriller. A good story, an excellent direction, great actors, good music. I have the DVD and saw it many times. It is sofisticated and tense. The initial scenes when begins the kidnapping, and when the security try to catch the car where is Juliette, are unique. I am shure that I will take a look at the blu-ray!!!
